Rocky Mount High senior linebacker Sherrod Greene was named to the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Monday. Greene, who committed to the University of South Carolina in July, was one of 88 players selected.
The game will take place on Dec. 17. at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
Last year, Greene registered 154 total tackles — 106 of which were solo — for a Gryphons team that went 14-2 overall and won the 2015 3-A state championships. It was the school’s first state title in 52 years.
Greene was named the Telegram’s 2015 All-Area Defensive Player of the Year after that season.
Though he sustained a hand injury during the offseason and missed the first two games of this year, Greene has continued to pester opposing offenses. The linebacker had back-to-back games with an interception against Edenton Holmes and Greenville Rose to help Rocky Mount High achieve a 5-1 record entering this idle week. The Gryphons will start Big East conference play next week. They are currently ranked fourth in the state AP poll, receiving one first place vote.
According to Matt Connolly at The State in Columbia, S.C., Greene is one of 11 future Gamecocks on the Shrine Bowl rosters.
The accolades could continue to roll in for Greene. He is currently on the Butkus Award watchlist, which recognizes the top linebackers in high school, college and the NFL.
