No one was going to deny Wilson Smith a state title.
The Rocky Mount High sophomore bullied his way through the 3-A 126-pound bracket at the NCHSAA Wrestling Championships in Greensboro to claim his first state championship after finishing third as a freshman.
Smith opened Saturday morning with a pin in the semifinals, and when the lights shined the brightest, he was ready.
Smith collected a takedown late in the first period to seize momentum, and a quick escape in the second period gave him a 3-0 lead.
The sophomore then put away the match with a 5-point move in which he took down North Buncombe’s Aydan Arroyo and put him on his back
The grapplers traded takedowns in the third period to reach the final score, 10-4.
